In July 2017 Estonia will, for the first time in history, take over the presidency of the Council of the EU. This means that during the following half-year Estonia will be organizing and chairing the summits and meetings of the Council and lead its working groups in order to identify common positions of the Member States. Estonia will therefore act a spokesperson for the European Union.

During its presidency, Estonia wants to highlight how digital sector can facilitate and enhance people’s lives in all respects. For example, if in every European country instead of submitting paper copies of medical prescription or proofs of employment you could just make a query in a database of a relevant institution, it would significantly accelerate and simplify existing administrative procedures.

To ensure that Europe continues to be a great place to live, Estonia wants to emphasize the importance of preserving a clean environment and making use of the latest technologies and ideas for maintaining not only European security and economy but also our transforming living environment. People’s expectations and understanding of work and the job market are changing, with more than half of today’s primary school students growing up to take up jobs that do not even exist yet. These are some of the topics that Estonia wants to discuss on the European level during its presidency.

Over 200 events, hosted primarily in Tallinn Creative Hub (Kultuurikatel), will take place in Estonia during the presidency

The Estonian presidency will run from 1 July until 31 December 2017.
